Ideal Clients

Who Mountain Dietitian Helps

This page is designed to help you self-identify whether this practice is likely to be a good fit for your situation — so your first conversation can be more focused and productive.

Conditions & Concerns

We work with adults navigating these challenges

All clients are 18 years or older. Services are available in-person (Mondays, Sewanee, TN) or via HIPAA-certified telehealth.

Anorexia Nervosa

Restrictive eating patterns, fear of weight gain, and distorted body image. Mary works within a HAES-informed recovery framework, coordinating with therapists and physicians as needed.

Bulimia Nervosa

Cycles of bingeing and purging that leave clients feeling out of control with food. Sessions focus on rebuilding a predictable, trust-based relationship with eating and the body.

Binge Eating Disorder

Recurrent episodes of eating large amounts of food, often rapidly and to the point of discomfort, without compensatory behaviors. Intuitive eating tools help address the restriction-binge cycle.

Orthorexia

A preoccupation with "clean" or "healthy" eating that becomes rigid and distressing. Mary helps clients build flexibility and reduce anxiety around food choices without abandoning their health values.

Chronic Dieting & Disordered Eating

Clients who don't meet the threshold for a clinical diagnosis but struggle with food rules, guilt, restriction cycles, or poor body image. These patterns are fully valid and treatable.

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

Evidence-based dietary approaches — including DASH-aligned strategies — implemented through an intuitive eating framework that avoids unnecessary restriction and supports long-term adherence.

High Cholesterol (Hyperlipidemia)

Nutritional strategies to support healthy lipid levels, always in the context of your whole dietary pattern, food preferences, and lifestyle — not through rigid elimination plans.

Type 2 Diabetes

Blood sugar management through thoughtful, sustainable dietary changes — coordinated with your physician's care plan. Focus is on building habits you can maintain for life, not temporary restriction.

Prenatal & Postpartum Nutrition

Nutritional support throughout pregnancy and postpartum recovery — including guidance on nutrient needs, managing food aversions, gestational concerns, and maternal wellbeing after delivery.

Honest Transparency

When we may refer you elsewhere

Mountain Dietitian is committed to being upfront about the limits of what this practice can best serve. If one of the below applies to your situation, Mary will have an honest conversation with you and help connect you with a more appropriate provider — you won't be left without options or direction.

This is never a rejection. It's simply a commitment to making sure every client gets the level and type of care that's truly right for them.

Ask if We're the Right Fit
Clients under 18 — pediatric-specialized nutrition care may be more appropriate for minors and adolescents.
Acute psychiatric instability — if you are currently in psychiatric crisis or require inpatient or residential-level care, a higher level of care is the right starting point.
Complex multi-specialty medical cases — conditions requiring a full clinical team (e.g., inpatient oncology nutrition, complex renal failure) may need a hospital-based dietitian.
Approach mismatch — if after your initial consultation it's clear a different therapeutic framework or specialist would serve you better, Mary will support that transition honestly.

Self-Assessment

Signs this is the right fit

You don't need to check every box. But if several of these resonate, Mountain Dietitian is likely a good match for you.

You're an adult (18+) looking for personalized, one-on-one nutrition support.
You want to build a healthier relationship with food — not follow another diet.
You're navigating an eating disorder, disordered eating, or body image concerns.
You have a medical condition (diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol) where nutrition plays a key role.
You're pregnant, postpartum, or navigating breastfeeding challenges.
You value a judgment-free, collaborative approach where your goals lead the process.
